Westhampton is a small rural community and is ranked among one of the safest towns in Massachusetts. Today, Westhampton has a strong agricultural community and is a Right to Farm town. Westhampton remains as one of the few Massachusetts towns that is “dry”, this means the sale of alcoholic beverages within its boundaries is prohibited.
In the mid-1700’s Westhampton was rich in natural resources like clean water, good fishing streams and large forests that supported wildlife and timber for harvesting. Land clearing was hard work as the soil was rocky but come the early 1800’s the only business, aside from farms, was a tannery. During this time, Sylvester Judd born in Westhampton, he was a Unitarian minister, American novelist, and friend of Ralph Waldo Emerson and Margaret Fuller. Another notable resident was Mordicai Gerstein who was best known for illustrating and writing children’s books.
The only major route that passes through Westhampton is MA-66. Northampton is east 9 miles and Knightville, in the town of Huntington, is 5 miles west. Springfield and Greenfield can both be reached in about 35 minutes via I-91.
