About Bernardston, MA

Bernardston is a small rural town in north central Franklin County, on the border between Massachusetts and Vermont. East and west of the town’s center where Falls River runs, the hills Bald Mountain and Wildcat Mountain, respectively, rise steeply to elevations above 1,100 feet. Bernardston is characterized by fertile, agricultural soil and features a rich network of rivers and streams that flow from springs in the surrounding hills and mountains.

Bernardston was first settled by the survivors and families of soldiers who had fought in a skirmish at the "Great Falls" in 1676 during "King Phillip's War". The town was formed as “Falls Fight Township” in 1734 then later changed to Bernardston in 1762, when the town petitioned for incorporation.

Bernardston is a 30-minute drive north on I-91 from Northampton and a short 9-mile drive from Greenfield along the same route. MA Route 5 runs north-south, parallel to I-91, and Route 10 passes east-west through the southern part of town.
